2023 Trashion Fashion Show

A contemporary and industrial inspired design made entirely of recycled materials. Constructed of old and used backpacks/daybags, this ready-to-wear look attests to the functionality and style of sustainable clothing. This was Ingrid's first feature in the Trashion Fashion Show.

About Trashion Fashion

Every April, Trashion Fashion celebrates the intersection of fashion, art, and environmental sustainability. The main event is a runway show that features unique garments, made by community members from recycled or found and unlikely materials. This event is run by the Sonoma Community Center and has been held every year since 2010. This year, the 13th annual show included thirty-two entries of outrageous head-to-toe designs, made from recycled materials and found objects.

Inspiration

For this design, I was inspired by industrial and streetwear styles. I took my inspiration directly from the source material that I chose to work with. My piece is both stylish and functional and plays with bold colors to create a striking look. I was also inspired by retro Japanese street fashion in the silhouette and shape of the look.

Fabrication Process

The entire look is made of three backpacks, a small duffel, and a tote bag. When I was creating the patterns for the top and skirt, I wanted to make sure to incorporate the elements that were original to the bag – pockets, zippers, straps, and buckles. I developed a patchwork of different fabrics following the shape of the original bags. In commitment to recycling trash, I took apart each layer of the bags and incorporated the varying fabric weights and textures into the look. The thinner, more flexible material was used for the areas that needed more movement, like the sleeves or the sides of the miniskirt.

Four straps connect the top to the skirt around the waist using magnetic snaps. The entire look incorporates numerous functional pockets including a mini "backpack" on the back.

Behind the Show

The 2023 fashion show consisted of two fully sold-out shows, matinee and evening. Entries included a junior section and an adult portion. The event also included a separate function and exhibition which had all the designs from the show on display over the following weeks for the community.
