Hunter Top: Mimaki Textile Print

The Hunter Top is a wrapped crop top designed with a digitally engineered print. The style and pattern are inspired from African textiles, more specifically Korhogo cloth. Korhogo cloth originates from the Senufo people of the Ivory Coast. The textile is made by hand painting designs with stencils on hand spun cotton fabric. The graphics and symbols include natural elements such as humans, nature, plants, animals, etc. The figures are meant to protect the wearer and shield them from evil spirits, often being worn by hunters or in ceremonial events.

Design

For the design of this top, I wanted to emulate and allude to the shapes and silhouette of Senufo garments. I went with a style that is more geometric and boxy around the body. However, I kept it contemporary with the cropped cut and the wrap and tie features.

Along the same design lines, I added embroidery detailing on the sleeves to incorporate the different geometric patterns and tie the whole top together. I went with stitching on the surface rather than digital print to give the garment more texture as well.

Mimaki Print

For my engineered print design, I chose the image of a hunter and a bird. By placing them on opposite sides of the garment, it creates the illusion of a singular picture when wrapped around the body. The ends of the ties are also digitally printed to create a gradient arrow effect. I wanted the focus of the entire piece to be geometric yet organic, thus the mix of prints and graphics.
