Fashion week is always eventful. And, in light of recent events, fashion week feels more hectic than ever before. In honor of Paris Fashion Week ending two weeks ago, I want to reflect on a trend that graced quite a few runways this year for Autumn/Winter 2020–gloves!
Personally, I love this trend, and I am thoroughly delighted to see that gloves are becoming an accessory for everyday. Gloves were featured in shows from Givenchy to Valentino to Lanvin and ranged from mini gloves to full opera length. If I’m being honest, my favorite look absolutely has to be the opera gloves, or evening gloves. There is something so classy yet playful about an accessory that seems just slightly too dramatic for everyday wear, especially if you’re a university student like me and spend most of your days in lecture halls and cafés. Nevertheless, I appreciate the beauty and versatility of this Autumn/Winter trend, regardless of whether or not I see myself partaking in it six months from now.
Gloves have a magical ability to elevate any look, making even casual outfits seem stylish and fashion forward. Gloves are also timeless. Since the late 18th century, women have been wearing gloves of various lengths and styles for both daytime and evening wear. They were also popular in the 40s and 50s, and seeing so many over-the-elbow gloves on the runways this year reminded me of old Hollywood and that image of glamour. The most obvious moment that comes to mind is Marilyn Monroe’s statement, brilliant pink gloves and dress set in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a look that has become iconic in the fashion and film worlds.
As a long time fan of vintage style and old Hollywood glamour, the return of gloves in everyday fashion is absolutely a trend I can get behind. Whether it be in the form of a subtle black glove or a full opera length satin glove, gloves are an accessory that serves both aesthetics and functionality. With so many ways to wear them and outfits to pair them with, you might even catch me sporting some leather gloves on campus come Fall 2020.
Till next time!
