The Essentials Dress

Dress Design Inspired by Covid-19

The name “Essentials” comes from the wish that we as a society and as individuals can see all that has happening during the year 2020 and recognize it for what it is. This dress reveals what is truly essential to people’s communities and empowers them to protect and treasure it.

This piece was designed at the beginning of the unprecedented year of 2020. Starting with a global pandemic to the nationwide issues of racial unrest to the critical effects of climate change on our communities, it was difficult to find moments of hope and positivity amid the unease. The design behind this dress is centered around the idea of perspective, self-care, and social awareness.

Inspiration & Process

This dress is meant to be playful and bright, with its youthful silhouette and mix of colors and prints. The use of repurposed paper grocery bags to create the bodice pushes the importance of essential workers and community members to the forefront of the design message.

Combined with the manipulation of recycled fabric for the entire skirt, this dress signifies the idea that art and beauty can be found and created in even through the most challenging situations.
